Peter Rubashumira Tibigambwa has spent the last six years working in prisons designing community driven programmes that seek to ensure that detainees have access to quality legal representation in Kenya and Uganda where 90% of suspects cannot afford legal representation. He is a Commonwealth Innovation Awards 2019 Peace category winner.

Peter is motivated by the belief that those in the local community are best placed to take a leading role in shaping and forming just societies by working with prisoners, prisons staff, legal professionals and academics.

His Prisons’ Justice Change Makers programme aims to address the barriers prisoners face to access justice such as lengthy pre-trial detention, inadequate access-to-legal advice and information, inadequate coordination and collaboration between the Justice, Law and Order Sector actors and prisons and the inadequate utilisation of alternatives to incarceration.
