COVID-19’s impact on Pacific island economies in 2020-21

Only ten countries in the world have not reported any COVID-19 cases. Seven of them are Pacific island member states of the Commonwealth, according to the BBC.

Tourism is a major contributor to economic growth in these countries. With tourism severely disrupted by the pandemic, the Asian Development Bank in its latest forecast released in August 2020 has predicted that the regional economy as a whole will shrink by 4.3 per cent in 2020 before recovering slightly in 2021.
